Until I received Conan the Adventurer, I had no idea this show ever existed. Much to my surprise, it's actually pretty fun, despite boasting somewhat cheap animation and stock effects.
Still, what Conan the Adventurer was lacking in animation, it made up for with vintage charm and clever stories. Season 2 keeps things interesting, as Conan faces off against a slew of new enemies. It's fairly clear, though, that the writers struggled with this season, as the show sort of takes up a repetitive villain-of-the-week-type template. It's still fun to watch, but a little mundane compared to the surprisingly dark narrative of Season 1. Is a two-disc DVD set which includes the first 13 episodes from that season. They include: 'Tribal Warfare,' 'Curse of Axh'oon,' 'Master Thief of Shadizar,' 'The Vengeance of Jhebbel Sag,' 'The Red Brotherhood,' 'Thunder and Lightening,' 'The Crevasse of Winds,' Hanuman the Ape God,' 'Isle of the Naids,' 'In Days of Old,' 'Birth of Wrath-Amon,' 'Earthbound,' and 'The Treachery of Emperors.'
The episodes are presented in full frame, mixed in 2.0 stereo. No subtitle options are provided. Ecs pm800-m2 rev 1.0 a drivers.
Unfortunately, there are no extras on this release, either. Hopefully Shout!
Will deliver some sort of retrospective in the near future. Fingers crossed.
The transfers here are about average compared to most vintage shows out there. It would seem the original tape masters were well kept at least, though this second season looks a little more faded and grimy than Season 1. The transfer exhibits a fine level of grain and very few distortions or damage, either from the tape source or the original film stock.
That said, as noted above, episodes do look faded and soft, with hazy images and dull contrast. The show's stereo track is a little on the underwhelming side. Prepare for a mercilessly quiet mix that never feels like it's living up to its potential.
Effects are poorly mixed, dialogue is soft and somewhat murky, and the show's soundtrack overbears. While some of these flaws are likely representative of a tape source, it's also possible high-caliber mixing simply wasn't on the table for this lesser-known series.
