Click to expand.Cale was great back then. I saw him many times at CBGB, My Father's Place on Long Island, The Lower Manhattan Ocean Club and opening for Patti Smith at the Palladium.

I also remember going to see him on a particularly brutal winter night out in Dover, NJ at The Show Place (where I also saw the RAMONES, DEVO and assorted other combos). There was literally nobody there, a couple of Social Security-collecting drunks at the bar, me. That was about it. Cale passed me at the bar when I was ordering a beer. He recognized me from my having attended virtually every show he was doing in the NY area and he gave me a nod, with arched eyebrow. It was the strangest, multifaceted 'nod' I've ever received. It was a mixture of, 'Thanks for supporting my efforts' and, 'What in God's name is a fan of mine doing here' and, 'Gee.

If you hadn't shown up I wouldn't be obligated to do a set tonight, but now that there's a PAYING CUSTOMER!' By the time he came on there were a dozen other fans. It was a grim night all around, but he was a trooper and while I remember it as a slightly truncated set he did 'put out.' It remains an oddly special John Cale memory for me. I first got Helen of Troy on LP. I think this was before the Island Years comp, or I didn't want to get that since I already had Fear -- also on LP, but US, not UK. The excellent sound on my Helen of Troy, which was a UK import since the album was not released in the States, was one of my early tip-offs to the differences to be had in sound quality, and into the wide world of caring about audio!

Not to mention it's a great album. I can see where people don't 'rate' it as highly others track for track, but as an emotional ride, it's a whopper, more intense than Fear and Slow Dazzle, I find. Music for a New Society is comparable, but more of a complete downer (Cale's vocal parts for nearly the whole album are a groan), whereas Helen of Troy is manic AND depressive. Wish I had been of age to catch Cale in his club show period. What turned things around for him?
